Best Wood Finishes

The finish makes the project. Choose the right one.

Danish oil is the easiest. Wipe it on, wipe it off. A natural look that highlights grain.

Polyurethane is durable. It protects against water and wear. Good for tabletops.

Shellac is classic and beautiful. It dries fast and builds a warm shine. Less durable.

Wax is soft and natural. Great for small pieces, poor for heavy use.

Test on scrap wood first. Finishes look different on different woods.

Apply thin coats. Multiple thin coats beat one thick one.

Sand between coats for a smooth result. The finish is as good as the surface under it.
